The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) will begin accepting applications next year for a new top-level domain name option that will let companies replace the ".com" with their brand names. So instead of searching for a sale on shoes at target.com, you might instead be pointing your browser toward shoes.target or sale.target.
